Weekly Honours Roundup: Larripa Leads the Country Again, Van Hellemont Wins It With Less Than a Second Left
Some weeks in US college hockey belong to one player. This week belonged to a few, across two conferences, and the numbers are worth a proper look.
Start with Clara Larripa, because the numbers are getting silly now. The Richmond senior has been named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. She scored six goals across two shutout wins: four against Lock Haven in a 10-0 road win, including a hat-trick in just under five minutes in the third quarter, and both goals in a 2-0 home win over No. 18 Louisville. Against Louisville she scored 30 seconds in, driving from the 25-yard line on the restart, and finished it with a penalty stroke in the 53rd minute.
Larripa now has 24 goals on the season. She leads the whole country in goals, in goals per game at 1.50, and in points per game at 3.38, with 54 points from 24 goals and six assists. Richmond close out the season on Friday 30 October, hosting VCU at 5pm on ESPN+. That game just got a lot more interesting, because VCU have their own winner this week.
Emma Clements of VCU takes the A10 defensive honour, and Saint Louis freshman Penny Dirou takes the rookie award. Dirou created the goal that beat Davidson 1-0, stealing the ball on the right flank, carrying it up the field and sending it into the circle for Ella Kappesser to finish. It was Dirou’s first collegiate point, and it kept Saint Louis alive for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Over in the CAA, Valentine Van Hellemont did something you don’t see every week. The Drexel senior midfielder scored the game-winning goal with less than one second remaining in a 3-2 win over Northeastern, a goal that clinched a CAA Tournament berth for the Dragons. Then she followed it with four assists in a 6-3 win over La Salle, tying the program record for assists in a single game. One goal and four assists for six points in a 2-0 week. That’s the CAA offensive award, and nobody will argue with it.
William & Mary’s Alexandra de Jesus takes the CAA defensive honour after anchoring a 5-0 shutout win over Hofstra, her first shutout of the season. Her teammate Callia Uviedo is the CAA rookie of the week, scoring her second goal of the season in the 48th minute of that same 5-0 win. William & Mary’s five-goal win was their largest margin of victory since a 7-0 win over Queens on 27 October 2023.
For our money, Larripa is the story of the college season right now. Twenty-four goals, a fifth weekly award, and a Friday game against VCU to finish the regular season. If she scores again, the gap at the top of the national charts only gets bigger.
