No. 11 Miami Stun Michigan 2-1 With a Late Corner Blitz in Oxford

Michigan had this one. Then Miami’s corners took it away.

No. 11 Miami (Ohio) came from a goal down to beat Michigan 2-1 in Oxford on Sunday, and the way they did it will sting the Wolverines. Two second-half goals, both from penalty corners, both set up by the same pair, and a winner with five minutes left.

Michigan started the better side. They bossed possession early, won the game’s first corner midway through the first quarter, and then won a second one less than 30 seconds later. Miami keeper Macarena Gonzalez got a glove to Eva Bernardy’s shot, but Natalie Millman was first to the rebound and Michigan led 1-0. They held that lead to half-time, and at that point a third straight win in this fixture for Michigan looked very much on.

It flipped in the third quarter. Millman was shown a green card at 33:02, Miami won consecutive corners inside 30 seconds, and Malena Sabez pounded one through the defensive unit to make it 1-1. Kylie Coughlin inserted, Toto Scarlatti set it up, and Sabez did what she’s done all season. That was her 13th goal of the year.

The winner came the same way, only later and louder. With five minutes left, Miami stacked four corners in a row, and on the fourth one Justina Intzes found the net, again with Coughlin and Scarlatti on the assists. Intzes now has 12 goals this season, and she and Sabez both sit in the top 20 nationally for goals per game.

The numbers back up what the eye saw. Miami outshot Michigan 10-8 and out-cornered them 7-4, Gonzalez made four saves, and Coughlin’s two assists took her to 14 for the season, a mark that keeps her in the top 10 nationally for assists per game.

This was only Miami’s third win over Michigan in program history, and it snapped a seven-game Michigan winning streak in the series. It also gave Miami a third win over a Big Ten side this season, and at 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the MAC, the RedHawks are building something serious. Michigan, meanwhile, drop to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in Big Ten play, and they’ll wonder how a game they led for so long got away from them on corners.
