US College Sunday: Maryland Bounce Back, Richmond Stun Louisville, Towson Run Riot

Sunday in US college hockey belonged to the teams that needed a response, and to one team that just kept scoring.

No. 1 Maryland are back to winning ways. The Terps went to No. 13 Indiana and won 1-0, days after their first defeat of the season. It was tight and defensive for a long half, with goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko making three first-half saves to keep it scoreless. Then Babs van Hest broke through in the 40th minute with her ninth goal of the season, and that was that. Klebasko finished with four saves for her 49th career win and 21st career shutout. Maryland are 15-1 now, with five ranked wins and nine shutouts this season, and they finish the regular season at home against Iowa on Friday 30 October.

Richmond pulled off the upset of the day. The Spiders beat No. 18 Louisville 2-0 at home, and the game was barely a minute old when it turned. Clara Larripa, the leading goalscorer in NCAA Division I, scored just 34 seconds in, and Louisville never recovered. The Cardinals actually outshot Richmond 10-7 and won the corner count 6-1, but they could not turn any of it into a goal. Larripa added a penalty stroke late on to seal it. Richmond move to 10-6, Louisville drop to 10-7, and the Cardinals now head to No. 10 Wake Forest on Friday for their regular-season finale and their last ACC game before tournament play.

Towson had the loudest day of all. The Tigers beat UC Davis 6-0 on Senior Day, and it was their biggest scoring day of the season. Anouk Westerink scored twice and set up another for a career-high five points, and five different Tigers found the net, including seniors Skylar Santucci and Lydia Bennett on their own Senior Day. Goalkeeper Riley Redding made two saves for her second shutout of the season. Six goals is the most Towson have scored in a game since 2009. The Tigers are 6-10 and finish their CAA campaign at home to Hofstra on Friday, while UC Davis fall to 3-12.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Sewanee spoiled Concordia Wisconsin’s Senior Day with a 3-0 win in Mequon, Husson edged Maine-Farmington 1-0 behind Lauren Millett’s 11th-minute goal and a shutout from Ella Duchette, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland beat Cedar Crest 3-0 to lock up the No. 2 seed, outshooting the visitors 26-1. Conference tournaments are nearly here, and the form guide is getting clearer by the game.
