NCAA to Seed Eight Teams in the Division I Field Hockey Championship, Up From Four

This one slipped past a lot of people last week, and it matters for every team still chasing a postseason run. The NCAA is changing how the Division I field hockey championship bracket is built.

From now on, 50% of the bracket will be seeded. In field hockey that means eight teams will be seeded for the 2026 championship, up from four. Men’s soccer is getting the same treatment, with 24 teams seeded instead of 16.

The idea, in the NCAA’s own words, is competitive balance. Seeding more teams should produce matchups based on strength rather than geography, and give players a better championship experience. The early-round rule that avoids matchups between teams from the same conference stays in place.

Liz Turner Suscha, the NCAA’s vice president of championships governance and policy, put it like this: “We are excited to launch the fall championships with this change for field hockey and men’s soccer teams. The selection committees working on these sports do an excellent job of identifying top teams and setting up pairings. Seeding more teams will enhance the work that they do to produce competitive fields for the field hockey and men’s soccer championships.”

The field hockey semifinals and championship game will take place on 20-22 November in Louisville, Kentucky.

Why does it matter? Because under the old system, only four teams were protected by a seed. A fifth or sixth ranked team could draw a brutal early game through geography or bad luck. Now eight teams get that protection, which means the top of the bracket should look a lot more like the actual top of the rankings.

It’s a quiet administrative change, but it changes the maths for everyone. Teams on the edge of the top eight now have something concrete to chase in these last regular-season games, and teams already in the top four have a little more breathing room. With conference tournaments starting this week, that race just got sharper.
