Belgium’s Women Return on 1 November: Gantoise Host Racing as Unbeaten Dragons Visit Braxgata
The women’s Belgian Hockey League is back on Sunday 1 November with six games, and the top of the table has a real look of a two-horse race with a chasing pack that won’t go away quietly.
Gantoise lead the way on 18 points from seven games, six wins and one defeat, and they host Racing in Ghent. Gantoise are the defending champions, winners of a seventh title last season, and they’ve started like they mean to keep it. Racing are fifth on ten points and they’re the draw specialists of the league, four draws in seven games. They don’t lose often, they just don’t win enough. Gantoise will want this done early. Racing will be happy to make it horrible.
The game of the day might be in Boom, where Braxgata host Dragons. Dragons are second on 17 points, unbeaten in seven, five wins and two draws, and they’ve scored 24 goals, the most in the league. Braxgata, champions the season before last, are sixth on nine points and badly need a statement win at home. A Dragons win keeps the pressure right on Gantoise. A Braxgata win drags the top three back into a crowd.
Leuven, third on 17 points and also unbeaten, travel to the Waterloo Ducks, who are seventh on eight points. Leuven have conceded seven in seven games, the tightest defence in the league, and the Ducks have shipped 16. On paper that’s an away win. In Belgium, on a Sunday in November, nothing is ever quite that simple.
At the bottom, it’s squeaky-bum time already. Léopold have lost all seven games, scored six, conceded 19, and they travel to Uccle Sport, who are tenth on five points. Uccle are one of the two promoted clubs this season, back in the top flight after climbing out of National 1, and a home game against the bottom side is exactly the kind of fixture promoted teams target. Léopold need something, anything, to stop the slide. A first point would do. A first win would change the mood completely.
The other two games matter just as much to the teams in them. Beerschot, the other promoted side, eighth on seven points, host Antwerp, fourth on 11 points, in an all-Antwerp-province meeting. And Victory, eleventh on five points, host Wellington, ninth on seven. Victory and Uccle are both on five points, and the bottom two at the end of the regular season face the relegation play-offs, so every point from now on counts double for the sides down there.
The shape of the season is set: 12 teams, top four go to the play-offs in May, with the final at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre. Gantoise, Dragons and Leuven have opened up a gap already, six or seven points clear of fourth-placed Antwerp. Sunday won’t settle anything, but it’ll tell us plenty about who can stay with the top three and who is sliding towards trouble.
