Gantoise Stay Top as Dragons and Leuven Keep the Pressure On in Belgium
The champions aren’t giving up top spot without a fight. Gantoise went to bottom side Léopold on Sunday and won 3-1, and that keeps them top of the women’s Belgian league with 18 points from seven games. Six wins, one defeat. That’s championship form, and everyone else knows it.
But the chasing pack isn’t going anywhere either. Dragons beat Beerschot 3-1 at home and stay second on 17 points, level with Leuven, who beat Victory 2-0. Two teams on 17, one point behind the leaders. That’s a title race, not a procession, and it’s exactly what this league needed after Gantoise’s strong start.
The rest of the card had goals everywhere. Antwerp and Waterloo Ducks shared eight in a 4-4 draw, which does neither side much good in the table but was surely fun to watch. Wellington and Uccle Sport played out a 3-3 draw, and Racing and Braxgata finished 1-1. Three draws on one card tells you how tight the middle of this league is right now.
That middle is where the play-off race will be decided. Antwerp sit fourth on 11 points, Racing fifth on 10, Braxgata sixth on 9. Then there’s a gap to the bottom half, where Wellington and Beerschot have seven points each and Uccle Sport and Victory have five. Léopold are still without a point after seven games, and their season is becoming about damage limitation and survival.
For our money, the Gantoise v Dragons gap is the one to watch. One point separates them, both sides keep winning, and neither looks like dropping points against the lower half. Something has to give eventually, and when these two meet, that game could decide who finishes top.
