Belgian League Men: Léopold v Gantoise Is a Straight Fight for Top Spot on Sunday
First against second. One point between them. Belgium didn’t need to manufacture a headline this Sunday, the table did it.
Léopold are top of the Belgian Hockey League, unbeaten after six games, 14 points, and the tightest defence in the division. Gantoise sit a point behind with the league’s best goal difference. On Sunday they play each other at Léopold, and by Sunday night Belgium will have a proper leader or a proper mess at the top. Either is fine with us.
How they got here
Sunday’s round was a day of draws at the top. Léopold drew 2-2 at Braxgata and stayed unbeaten. Gantoise drew 2-2 with Orée. Waterloo Ducks drew 2-2 with Beerschot. Nobody blinked, nobody gained, and the one side that did gain ground was Uccle Sport, who put eight past Namur and sit fourth on 11 points.
Which brings us to Namur. Six played, six lost, 26 goals conceded. They host Herakles on Sunday, and at some point a promoted side has to find a result or the season becomes arithmetic. This feels like one of the kinder chances they’ll get.
Sunday’s full list
Champions Waterloo Ducks, third on 13 points, travel to Daring, who have two points and lost 4-1 to Herakles last week. Waterloo should win it, but “should” has been doing heavy lifting in their season.
Dragons, down in tenth after losing 4-2 to Racing, host Beerschot and need a win before their season turns into a relegation conversation. Racing, who won that game, host Braxgata, the side with a game in hand and a postponed Orée fixture now set for 29 October. And Orée themselves, eighth with a game in hand, host Uccle, the league’s top scorers and the last side anyone wants to visit right now.
Fixtures — Sunday 25 October 2026:
- Léopold v Gantoise
- Daring v Waterloo Ducks
- Dragons v Beerschot
- Namur v Herakles
- Orée v Uccle Sport
- Racing v Braxgata
Top of the table: Léopold 14 pts (unbeaten) · Gantoise 13 · Waterloo Ducks 13 · Uccle Sport 11 · Braxgata 10 (game in hand) · Herakles 9 · Racing 9.
Our take
Léopold at home, with that defence, start favourites, but Gantoise score goals in bunches and a draw suits neither side’s ambitions with Waterloo waiting. For our money this is the weekend the Belgian title race stops being polite. Somebody’s unbeaten start to the season is under real threat, and it might not be the side you think.
