EY Hockey League 2026-27: Ireland’s Season Guide — Lisnagarvey and Loreto Defend Their Crowns
Here’s the catch with Irish hockey: you can boss the league all season and still go home empty-handed. In the EY Hockey League, the table only gets you to the party. The silverware gets decided on one spring weekend.
How the season actually works
The EY Hockey League is Irish hockey’s flagship club competition, run by Hockey Ireland on an all-island basis. The 2026-27 season started on 19 September 2026, and it’s already shaping into another fierce campaign.
Both the men’s and women’s competitions feature 10 teams playing 18 rounds of league hockey. But the league table is only half the story. The season builds towards the EY Champions Trophy play-off weekend in the spring, where the finalists settle the championship.
Consistency gets you there. One big weekend wins it.
The two crowns everyone wants
The defending champions know that better than anyone. Lisnagarvey hold the men’s crown and Loreto are the women’s champions, and both start the season as the sides to beat.
Every other club in the league measures its progress against those two. Round by round, the table sorts the contenders from the rest before the spring play-offs, and nobody’s autumn form counts for much if it falls apart when the Trophy weekend arrives.
Small island, serious hockey
Ireland keeps producing above its size, and this league is a big reason why. The men are 11th in the FIH world rankings on 2,645 points, the women 13th on 2,426. Competitive on the world stage, and powered by players who come through the EY Hockey League’s weekly battles.
SportsCursor will follow the Irish season in the Leagues section, from the early rounds all the way to the Champions Trophy weekend.
