Belgium Standings: Léopold Stay Top, Waterloo Ducks One Point Back, and a Catch-Up Game Lands on Wednesday
Seven games in, and Belgium has a proper title race taking shape at the top and a worrying gap opening at the bottom. Léopold lead on 17 points. Five wins, two draws, no defeats, 21 goals scored and 10 conceded. They’ve beaten Dragons 2-1, Gantoise 2-0, Namur 5-4 and Racing 2-0, and drawn with Braxgata and Orée. That’s the profile of a team that doesn’t need to be spectacular every week, just hard to beat. And so far, nobody has beaten them.
One point behind sit the defending champions. Waterloo Ducks have 16 points from five wins, a draw and one defeat, and their one defeat is the interesting one, because it came at Gantoise, 2-0 in Ghent, in the kind of game that decides titles in May. Everywhere else they’ve been ruthless: 3-2 at Braxgata, 5-1 at Daring, 4-1 at Dragons, 4-2 at home to Uccle Sport, and a 2-2 draw at Beerschot. A point behind with a game against winless Namur next is not a bad place to be.
Gantoise and Braxgata share third on 13 points. Gantoise have the goals, 21 scored, and a 7-0 win over Daring that says plenty about both teams. Braxgata have a game in hand, six played to everyone else’s seven, which is where Wednesday comes in.
Wednesday’s catch-up matters. Orée against Braxgata was postponed from matchday five because Orée were playing in the Euro Hockey League’s opening round in Eindhoven. It lands on Wednesday 29 October, and it’s not a free hit for either side. Braxgata win and they go level with Gantoise on points with a game still in hand on the top two. Orée, eighth on seven points with four draws from six, could do with turning draws into wins before the chasing pack leaves them behind. A draw suits nobody much, which usually makes for a decent game.
Below them, Herakles and Uccle Sport both sit on 12 points, and Herakles have scored 23 goals in seven games, the joint-highest in the league. Racing are seventh on nine. Then the gap. Beerschot have six points, Dragons five, and the two promoted clubs are struggling badly. Daring have two points from seven games and have conceded 31 goals. Namur have none at all, seven defeats, 30 conceded, seven scored. It’s late October and the relegation picture is already uncomfortably clear for both of them.
The next full round is Sunday 1 November: Beerschot host Daring, Braxgata host Dragons, Gantoise host Racing, Herakles host Orée, Léopold host Uccle Sport, and Waterloo Ducks host Namur. For our money, Léopold against Uccle is the test of the leaders, and Waterloo against Namur is the one the champions simply have to win. If both win, the gap at the top stays at one point, and Wednesday’s catch-up will have decided who carries the momentum into November.
