Hoofdklasse Standings: Amsterdam Perfect After Six, Den Bosch Two Back, and the Champions Are Stuck in Seventh

Six games in, and the Dutch league has already split into two stories. At the top, Amsterdam haven’t dropped a point. At the bottom of the top half, the defending champions are going backwards.

Amsterdam sit top on 18 points from six wins, 26 goals scored and only six conceded. That’s a goal difference of plus 20, and it’s not a soft schedule doing the work either. They’ve beaten HDM 4-1, Pinoké 2-1 and Tilburg 5-0 among the results on the board, and they’ve done it while Bloemendaal and Den Bosch have been winning most weeks too. When you’re perfect and your rivals are winning, you’re earning it.

Den Bosch are second on 16 points, five wins and a draw, with Timo Boers on five penalty-corner goals. Bloemendaal and Oranje-Rood share third on 13 points each, though Oranje-Rood have a game in hand, five played to Bloemendaal’s six. Oranje-Rood’s 3-2 win over Bloemendaal in Eindhoven was the standout result of Round 6, and it leaves the Eindhoven side as the one team in the top four nobody has beaten yet. Kampong complete the top five on 10 points from five games.

Rotterdam’s title defence is wobbling. Then there’s Rotterdam. The champions, who beat Amsterdam 5-4 on aggregate in last season’s final, are seventh on six points. Two wins, four defeats, 18 scored and 18 conceded. They’ve lost 4-3 at home to Amsterdam, 5-2 at SCHC and 5-3 at Kampong in the results recorded so far, and a team that scores three a game on average shouldn’t be sitting in mid-table. They aren’t out of anything in late October, the top four is only seven points away, but the margin for a slow autumn is gone. Another defeat in Round 7 and the conversation turns from a slow start to a real problem.

At the other end, Schaerweijde and Tilburg are both still without a point after six games. Schaerweijde have conceded 27 and scored six. Tilburg have scored two. Two. The relegation fight looks like a two-team race already, and both of them need something from Round 7 just to change the mood.

One individual note worth keeping. HDM’s Fabian Verzuu leads the scoring chart on six goals, all field goals, which is a fine return for a side sitting tenth. It tells you something about where HDM’s problems are, and they aren’t in front of goal.

Round 7 comes on Sunday 1 November, and it doesn’t mess about. Amsterdam host Bloemendaal at the Wagener Stadium, top against third, and that’s the game of the weekend in the Netherlands. Den Bosch host Klein Zwitserland, Rotterdam host Oranje-Rood with a chance to drag a rival back towards them, and Kampong host Schaerweijde. For our money, Amsterdam against Bloemendaal decides whether this stays a race or starts to look like a procession.
