Belgium on Sunday: Léopold Put Their Perfect Record on the Line at Uccle as the Ducks Hunt Winless Namur
Sunday 1 November is a full card in Belgium, and the top of the table gets its hardest test yet. Leaders Léopold travel to Uccle Sport. Champions Waterloo Ducks host a Namur side still looking for their first point. And before any of that, there’s a catch-up game on Thursday that could shuffle the whole pack.
Léopold sit top on 17 points from seven games, unbeaten, one point clear of the Ducks. They’ve earned it the hard way. Five wins, two draws, 21 goals scored and only 10 conceded. They’ve beaten Dragons 2-1, Gantoise 2-0 and Racing 2-0, and they survived a 5-4 thriller against Namur. The two draws came against Braxgata, 2-2, and Orée, 1-1. Uccle are no soft touch either. They’re sixth on 12 points, and they’ve scored 24 goals, the most in the league, including eight past Namur. Uccle at home, with that attack, against a Léopold side that doesn’t concede many. That’s the game of the weekend in Belgium, for our money.
Waterloo Ducks, the defending champions, get the kindest fixture on paper. Namur have lost all seven, scored seven, conceded 30. The Ducks are second on 16 points, and their only defeat so far came at Herakles, 3-1. They’ve already hit five at Daring and beaten Braxgata 3-2. On form, this should be comfortable. But Namur pushed Léopold all the way in that 5-4 defeat, so the Ducks will know better than to treat it as a training run. Goal difference could matter in May, and the Ducks are already one behind Léopold on that count too, plus ten against plus eleven.
The other four games all have something riding on them. Braxgata, fourth on 13 points with a game in hand, host Dragons, tenth on five points. Gantoise, third on 13, host Racing, seventh on nine. Herakles, fifth on 12 with 23 goals to their name, host Orée, eighth on seven points with a game in hand and the league’s form European side in their ranks. And at the bottom, Beerschot, ninth on six points, host promoted Daring, eleventh on two points with 31 goals conceded. Daring need something soon. Beerschot are the team they can realistically catch.
Then there’s Thursday. Orée against Braxgata, the matchday five game postponed because Orée were away at the Euro Hockey League Round 1 in Eindhoven, is rearranged for 29 October. Orée were superb there: an 11-0 win over Slavia Prague, a 2-2 draw with Rot-Weiss Köln, and Loris Grandchamp finishing as the round’s top scorer with five goals, all from penalty corners. If Braxgata win on Thursday, they go to 16 points, one behind Léopold, before Sunday even starts. If Orée win, they climb to ten points and drag themselves into the chasing pack. Either way, Sunday’s card lands differently because of it.
Six games, twelve teams, and a table that could look very different by Sunday night. Léopold have set the pace all season. This weekend, for the first time, it feels like the chasing pack might actually catch them.
