NESCAC Quarter-Finals on Saturday: Perfect Tufts Host Colby, Middlebury Get Amherst Again, Williams Face Hamilton

Saturday is the day the NESCAC season gets serious. Four quarter-finals, all at the higher seeds, and the winners go to the semi-finals on 7 November at the highest remaining seed, with the championship game on 8 November.

The headline tie is the one nobody at Tufts will be taking lightly, even though the record says they should. No. 1 Tufts host No. 8 Colby at noon local time (9:00pm PKT). Tufts are 15-0 overall and finished 10-0 in the NESCAC, the first 10-0 conference season in programme history and only the second undefeated conference season they’ve ever had. They beat Bowdoin 1-0 on Tuesday night to complete it, Eleanor Helm scoring her 16th goal of the season early in the fourth quarter. Colby are 8-7 and 3-7 in the league. On paper it’s a mismatch. In a knockout game, with a perfect season on the line, it never feels like one.

No. 2 Middlebury host No. 7 Amherst, also on Saturday, and this one has recent history. Middlebury beat Amherst 3-0 earlier this season, and the Panthers come in as conference favourites: 10 NESCAC titles, six of the last eight, 94 wins in their last 100 home games, 45 goals scored and nine conceded with nine shutouts this season. They lead the all-time series 37-8-1 and have won the last five tournament meetings between the sides. But Amherst have the kind of player who can wreck a favourite’s afternoon. Genevieve Caruso has 13 goals and six game-winners this season, and the Mammoths have won 11 NESCAC tournament games in their history. They earned this trip by beating Trinity 4-1 on Tuesday. Middlebury also beat Williams 1-0 on Tuesday, Claire McMichael scoring in the 13th minute, to close the regular season. Amherst’s only comfort is an old one: they won the teams’ only previous quarter-final meeting, 2-1, back in 2000. That’s a long time to hang a hope on, but it’s something.

The other two ties are just as tight. No. 3 Bowdoin, 10-3 overall and 7-3 in the NESCAC, host No. 6 Wesleyan at noon local time (9:00pm PKT). Bowdoin lost that 1-0 game at Tufts on Tuesday, but goalkeeper Eva Filipponi saved everything Tufts threw at her until the fourth quarter, and the Polar Bears have won eight in a row at one point this season. No. 4 Williams host No. 5 Hamilton at 11:00am local time (8:00pm PKT) at Williamson Field. Williams are 10-5 and 6-4 in the league, Hamilton 11-4 and 6-4, and the Ephs have won seven straight against Hamilton dating back to 2019, including a 1-0 win earlier this season. Hamilton will fancy ending that run. Williams will fancy keeping it going at home.

For our money, Tufts and Middlebury should both get through, and the Williams-Hamilton tie is the one to watch. But the NESCAC has a habit of ruining neat predictions in the quarter-finals. That’s why Saturday matters.
