Wilkes and Susquehanna Set Up a Saturday Rematch After Tuesday Shutout Wins
Saturday’s game has a history, and Tuesday night just added to it. Wilkes and Susquehanna both won shutouts on Tuesday to reach the Landmark Conference Championship, and now they play each other on Saturday at Wilkes. The Colonels won the regular-season meeting 2-0 at Susquehanna. The River Hawks get their rematch with a season on the line. That’s a proper playoff setup.
Wilkes did their work early against Lycoming. Three goals in the first 24 minutes, then a second half spent holding off a Lycoming attack that kept coming. Goalkeeper Chloe Gilroy made 11 saves in the shutout, and Sage Morgan led the Colonels with four shots as nine different Wilkes players recorded a shot. The numbers that matter most are these: Wilkes allowed only five goals in nine Landmark games all season. That’s a defence that doesn’t give games away. The win clinched the No. 3 seed and a home game on Saturday at 1pm, Wilkes’ first-ever Landmark Championship home game.
Susquehanna’s route was slower and just as convincing in the end. The River Hawks beat Goucher 2-0 in Baltimore, scoring twice in the second half to close out their regular season. They earned 11 penalty corners to Goucher’s seven, including six in the fourth quarter as they kept the pressure on, and held Goucher scoreless for all four quarters. It was their seventh win of the season and fifth in the Landmark, and it booked their postseason place.
The other side of the bracket is set too. Fourth seed Elizabethtown host fifth seed Drew on Saturday, with top seed Scranton and second seed Catholic waiting on byes. The Elizabethtown/Drew winner plays Scranton next Tuesday, while the Wilkes/Susquehanna winner takes on Catholic.
For our money, the Wilkes game is the pick of Saturday. A home crowd, a first-ever home playoff game, a defence that barely concedes, and an opponent with a score to settle. That’s what October hockey is for.
