Wagner Score Nine and Clinch the NEC’s Top Seed

Wagner picked the right night to have their best attacking game of the season. The Seahawks put nine past Merrimack on Friday night, kept a clean sheet at the other end, and walked off with something much bigger than three points: at least a share of the NEC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.

Natalie McGivern led the way with a hat trick. Mylee Retherford, Gabrielle Childs, Julia de Leeuw, Kayla Sykes, Erika Parker and Floortje Leunisse got one each, and that was that. Nine goals is Wagner’s biggest haul of the season, and doing it on the road, in a game that decided the top seed, makes it even better.

The win moves Wagner to 8-6 overall and a perfect 7-0 in NEC play. The conference tournament semi-finals are on Thursday 5 November, and Wagner will go into them as the team everyone has to beat.

Friday’s other results around the country were already covered in our Friday round-up and leftovers, but Wagner’s was the one with a trophy attached. That’s the difference between a good night and a season-defining one.
