Tuesday in America: Amherst Book a Trip to Middlebury, Adelphi Make It Five Straight With a 42-1 Shot Count
Two very different wins, same story: the postseason is here, and the teams in form are not slowing down.
Amherst 4-1 Trinity: the Mammoths are going to Middlebury. No. 16 Amherst closed out the regular season with a 4-1 win at Trinity on Tuesday night, and the prize is a NESCAC quarter-final trip to No. 2 Middlebury. Amherst scored twice in 42 seconds, added two more in the fourth quarter, and outshot Trinity 19-8 with a 14-6 edge in shots on goal. Trinity, to their credit, didn’t fold. They kept Amherst scoreless in the third quarter, goalkeeper Sydney Korkosz made nine saves, and Claire Griffith scored late for the Bantams’ only goal. It was Trinity’s home finale and the end of their season: 6-9 overall, 1-9 in the NESCAC. That’s still the programme’s best winning percentage since 2023, built on four wins over ranked or conference opponents. Not the ending they wanted, but not a wasted season either. Amherst go in as the No. 7 seed, and Middlebury are a brutal draw. But the Mammoths earned their place the hard way, and a team that can score twice in under a minute can ruin anyone’s afternoon.
Adelphi 4-0 Southern Connecticut State: 42 shots to one. Over in the NE10, Adelphi didn’t just beat Southern Connecticut State. They buried them. 4-0 at Motamed Field, with a shot count of 42-1 and a 16-1 edge in penalty corners. That’s not a game, that’s a siege. Sydney Flores scored 30 seconds in. Lana Mignon De Wet added her team-leading 19th goal of the season. Jena Geels scored twice and added an assist for five points on the night. Tayla Szmak needed to make one save all game; Allison Gregory came on to finish the shutout in the fourth quarter. The win is Adelphi’s fifth straight, their 15th in a row over the Owls, and it lifts the Panthers to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the NE10. Southern Connecticut drop to 7-9 and 3-4 in the conference. Adelphi host American International on Saturday at 1pm, with the graduating class honoured beforehand. On this form, the visitors are walking into a buzzsaw.
