Léopold Off the Mark at Last: First Point of the Season as Gantoise and Dragons Keep Winning in Belgium
Eight games, no points, and then finally something to celebrate. Léopold are off the mark.
The bottom side drew 1-1 at Uccle Sport on Sunday, their first point of the women’s Belgian Hockey League season after seven straight defeats. It won’t lift them off the bottom, they stay 12th on one point, but after conceding 19 goals in their first seven games, a point on the road is a start. Uccle, the promoted side, move to six points, and they’ll be kicking themselves for not taking all three against the team below them.
At the top, the big two did their jobs without any fuss. Leaders Gantoise beat Racing 3-0 to reach 21 points from eight games, seven wins and one defeat, and the defending champions look very hard to catch. Dragons, still unbeaten, won 2-0 at Braxgata to stay second on 20 points, six wins and two draws. The gap between those two and the rest is starting to feel real.
The shock of the day came in Waterloo, where the Ducks beat Leuven 1-0. Leuven arrived unbeaten and third, and they leave with a first defeat, stuck on 17 points. The Ducks climb to 11. Antwerp beat Beerschot 2-1 to move fourth on 14 points, and Wellington won 5-2 at Victory, moving to 10 points while Victory stay on five, deep in the relegation fight.
So after Sunday: Gantoise 21, Dragons 20, Leuven 17, Antwerp 14, Waterloo Ducks 11, Racing 10, Wellington 10, Braxgata 9, Beerschot 7, Uccle Sport 6, Victory 5, Léopold 1. Gantoise against Dragons is shaping up as the game that decides this league, and on this form, neither side looks like blinking first.
Scores are from the league’s results matrix (Carlsberg 0.0 Hockey League schedule); no individual scorers were listed at the time of writing.
