Tuesday in US College Hockey: Hoffmann Runs Riot for Cortland, Williams Edge a Top-10 Clash

No Division I games on Tuesday. The big schools had the night off. The rest of college hockey didn’t, and it threw up the best individual performance of the season so far.

Hoffmann’s career day

Sadie Hoffmann scored her first college hat-trick and added an assist as No. 13 Cortland hammered Morrisville 7-0 at home in the SUNYAC. Seven points, a career best, and the first Cortland hat-trick since 2024.

She wasn’t even the only record story in the game. Gabriella Gemelli laid on four assists, matching Cortland’s single-game assist record, a mark she had already tied once before, against the same opponents last year. Some teams just bring it out of you.

Spare a thought for Morrisville’s goalkeepers, mind. Emmaly Noeller made 15 saves in three quarters and still shipped five. Cortland are 11-2 now and rolling. Morrisville drop to 5-6.

The NESCAC game lived up to it

The ranked clash of the night was in Williamstown, where No. 8 Williams beat No. 5 Hamilton 1-0. One goal in it, and it came late: Kayla Bohlin scored midway through the fourth quarter, Dakota Adams with the assist, and Ellie Smith’s three saves did the rest.

Hamilton threw everything at the last minutes, pulled their keeper for an extra field player, won a corner in the final minute, and still couldn’t get it done. Morgan Clarke made two defensive saves on the line at the death with the cage empty. That’s how you close a game. Williams have won four of their last five and sit tied for third in the NESCAC. Hamilton stay fifth with one game left.

The rest of Tuesday

MIT stayed unbeaten in the NEWMAC at 7-0 in conference, beating WPI 3-1 in Cambridge after a scoreless first half. WPI’s Myles Lakin made 13 saves and still ended up on the losing side, which tells you how the game went.

Mount Holyoke beat Smith 2-0 in the other NEWMAC game, Diane Lee opening the scoring early in the first quarter. Wesleyan put eight past Western New England in an 8-1 win in Middletown, three of them in the first quarter. Lander shut out Wingate 2-0 for a fourth straight win, Floor Mulder and Lily Drijftholt scoring. Catholic held off a late Susquehanna rally to win 2-1, and Moravian’s Dani Lister scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute to beat Goucher 1-0.

Wednesday brings the Division I sides back, Duke at Wake Forest among them, and Thursday is the big one: No. 1 Maryland at No. 2 Northwestern. Tuesday was the warm-up act. It did its job. The other big Tuesday story was Babson’s 6-0.
