300 Up for Julie Ryan: Babson Blank Springfield 6-0 Behind Baroni’s Four
Some milestones arrive in tight games. Julie Ryan’s 300th win arrived in a rout.
No. 17 Babson beat Springfield 6-0 on Tuesday night at MacDowell Field, and the scoreline flatters nobody. Junior Penny Baroni scored a career-high four goals, senior Helen DiGiovanni added two, and Springfield’s two-game winning run ended with a thud.
The win takes Babson to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC, their second straight victory. Springfield drop to 8-7 and 2-5 in conference play.
But the number that matters from the night is Ryan’s. Three hundred career wins as Babson’s head coach, sealed by a team that scored six and conceded nothing. Coaches don’t get to pick how the landmark game goes. If they could, they’d pick exactly this. The US college picture is moving fast this week — Thursday brings the No. 1 v No. 2 showdown between Maryland and Northwestern.
