Hockey One 2026: Australia’s Franchise League Is Under Way — Teams, Format and Finals Race
Most leagues hand you a season. Hockey One hands you a sprint.
Australia’s franchise league is back, and it doesn’t hang around. The whole thing runs from 8 October to 6 December, nine weeks of spring hockey where a bad weekend can wreck your finals chances. The 2026 edition, the biggest yet, got under way on 8 October.
Eight franchises, two of them in Melbourne
The league has grown from seven franchises to eight. The new name on the list is the Melbourne Cobras, which means Melbourne now fields two sides, the Cobras and HC Melbourne. The rest of the field is the Adelaide Fire, Brisbane Blaze, Canberra Chill, NSW Pride, Perth Thundersticks and Tassie Tigers. Every franchise runs a men’s team and a women’s team, and they play as double-headers, so one ticket gets you both games.
No draws. None.
This is the bit fans love. Hockey One doesn’t do drawn matches. Finish level and a shoot-out decides it, so somebody always walks away with the win.
Then there’s the rule you won’t see anywhere else. Convert a field goal or a penalty stroke and you earn a one-on-one shoot-out attempt for a bonus goal. Score, and one goal becomes two. For our money it’s the cleverest rule in club hockey, because it pays teams to attack. Sitting on a 1-0 lead looks daft when the other lot can turn one break into two goals.
Blink and the season’s moved on
Round 1 was played across 8–11 October, and Round 2 lands on 17–18 October. In a season this short, the finals picture changes every single round. It all ends with the Finals Series at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre on 5–6 December, where the champions get crowned.
Why should anyone outside Australia care? Because Australian hockey still sets standards. The Kookaburras sit third in the FIH men’s world rankings and the Hockeyroos are a top-ten women’s side, and a big chunk of that talent plays its club hockey right here. The other reason is simpler: the season fits inside two months. You can follow this league properly, start to finish, without it eating your year. SportsCursor will track the rounds as the finals race takes shape.
