Belgium’s Title Race Tightens on Sunday: Léopold’s Perfect Record, Ducks and Braxgata in Pursuit
Sunday in Belgium is a proper title-race day, even if the table looks a little strange at first glance. Léopold lead the way on 17 points from seven games, still unbeaten with five wins and two draws, and they go to Uccle Sport, who sit on 12 points and have made a habit of being awkward for the big sides.
Chasing them are the two teams on 16 points: defending champions Waterloo Ducks, and Braxgata. The Ducks host winless Namur, bottom of the table with seven defeats from seven and a goal difference of minus 23. On paper that’s the most one-sided game of the day. Braxgata, fresh from their rearranged 1-0 win at Orée on Thursday, host Dragons, who are down in the relegation play-off places on five points. Neither the Ducks nor Braxgata can afford a slip, because Léopold aren’t dropping points often.
Elsewhere on Sunday’s six-game card, Gantoise host Racing, Herakles host Orée, and Beerschot host Daring. Gantoise are the odd ones in the table: their 13 points somehow sit them in the chasing pack, and a win over Racing keeps them right in the play-off hunt. Herakles against Orée is the form-versus-frustration game: Herakles have scored 23 goals in seven games but lost three of them, while Orée have drawn four of their seven and turned into the team nobody beats easily. Beerschot against Daring is a basement scrap with real stakes, Daring on two points and Beerschot on six, and both know the relegation picture is already starting to form.
For our money, the game that matters most is at Uccle. If Léopold win there, they stretch the gap and the chasing pack starts running out of room. If Uccle take something off them, the Ducks and Braxgata have a genuine opening, and the title race goes from tight to wide open in one afternoon.
