ACC Bracket Set: UNC Get the Top Seed and Stanford, Duke Draw Boston College in Tuesday’s Quarter-Finals

The ACC regular season is done, and the bracket has thrown up exactly the kind of quarter-final day that makes November in college hockey worth watching. Eight of the league’s nine programs are in, all seven games are at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, admission is free, and everything is on ACC Network.

North Carolina are the No. 1 seed. The Tar Heels finished 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the ACC, sharing the regular-season title with Duke and Wake Forest, and they took the top seed on a tiebreaker. Their reward is a Tuesday 10:00am ET quarter-final against No. 8 seed Stanford (10-7, 2-6 ACC). The regular-season meeting between these two was not close: North Carolina won 8-1 in California. Stanford will need something completely different this time, and UNC will know it.

The second quarter-final, at 12:30pm ET, is the one that could go either way: No. 4 Syracuse (9-6, 4-4) against No. 5 Louisville (10-8, 4-4). Syracuse beat the Cardinals 4-2 in Syracuse on 9 October, but a one-goal swing in a game like this is nothing, and Louisville have the record to suggest they won’t be overawed.

Then it gets spicy. No. 2 Wake Forest (13-5, 6-2), the third co-champions, meet No. 7 Virginia (8-6, 3-5) at 3:30pm ET, and Virginia won the regular-season meeting 1-0 in overtime through Caitlin Connell. That’s the upset alert of the day, a lower seed with a recent win over the team above them and nothing to lose.

The nightcap, at 6:00pm ET, is No. 3 Duke (12-4, 6-2) against No. 6 Boston College (8-9, 3-5). Duke won the regular-season meeting 1-0 in Durham on 27 September, Callie Rogers scoring the only goal. Duke’s season ended with that 2-1 loss at North Carolina on Friday, Heck’s brace settling it, and the Blue Devils will want to put that right quickly. Boston College, meanwhile, have already shown they can keep Duke to a single goal. If they can do it again and nick one at the other end, the bracket opens right up.

The winners go to Wednesday’s semi-finals at 1:00pm and 3:30pm ET, and the championship game is Friday 6 November at 3:00pm ET. For viewers in Pakistan, Tuesday’s games run from 8:00pm PKT (UNC v Stanford) through to 4:00am PKT on Wednesday (Duke v Boston College), with the final at 1:00am PKT on Saturday.

For our money, UNC against Stanford looks the safest pick of the four, and Wake Forest against Virginia the most dangerous. But that’s the ACC tournament for you: the team that wins it is rarely the team that looked safest on Tuesday morning.
