Belgian Hockey League 2026-27: Season Guide — Waterloo Ducks, Gantoise and the Title Race
Twenty-four teams. Two defending champions. And a whole season, September to May, for somebody to knock them off.
That’s the Belgian Hockey League in 2026-27, and here’s the thing about Belgium: this little country keeps embarrassing the giants. The men sit second in the world rankings. The women sit third. And none of it’s an accident, because nearly all of that talent is home-grown, raised in this league, playing hard club hockey every single week.
The league that built two top-three teams
Belgium’s rise didn’t come from a golden generation falling out of the sky. It came from strong clubs playing high-tempo hockey week after week, and the national teams picking straight from them. The Red Lions draw the core of their squad from this league. The Red Panthers do the same.
The numbers back it up. Belgium’s men are world No. 2 with 3,692 points, tucked in just behind Germany. The women are No. 3 on 3,494 points. A domestic league feeding two top-three national teams at the same time isn’t normal. It’s a system working exactly as designed.
A target on two backs
The 2026-27 season opened on 20 September 2026 and runs all the way to 23 May 2027, with 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams in the top flights.
Waterloo Ducks start as the men’s champions to beat. Gantoise hold the women’s crown. Both of them know what’s coming: months of challengers who’ve had their fixtures circled since the summer.
And for our money, holding a Belgian title is harder than winning one. The campaign stretches across autumn, winter and spring, form comes and goes, and there’s always some young side improving faster than anyone expected. Can the Ducks and Gantoise defend their crowns, or is this the year the challengers finally break through?
SportsCursor will follow the Belgian season in the Leagues section as the race develops.
