Brisbane Blaze Win a Hobart Shootout and NSW Pride Hit Adelaide for Seven in Women’s Hockey One

Saturday in Women’s Hockey One gave us both extremes. A shootout in Hobart that went to the very last takers, and a rout in Adelaide that was over long before the end.

In Hobart, Tassie Tigers and Brisbane Blaze finished 3-3 and nobody could separate them in 60 minutes. The Tigers led through a field goal and conversion from Pearson in the 39th minute, and Biekart added a penalty stroke in the 57th. The Blaze answered with Kershaw from a penalty corner in the 26th minute and Malone’s field goal and conversion in the 49th.

Then the shootout. The Tigers missed all four of their attempts. The Blaze only needed two, from Strauss and Malone, to take the extra point with a 2-0 shootout win. That’s a brutal way to lose a home game, and a huge point for a Blaze side that had won just once before Saturday.

Adelaide was a different story entirely. NSW Pride beat the Fire 7-0 at the State Hockey Centre, and the scoring was spread right across the team. Smith opened it from a penalty corner, M. Jones scored twice, Patterson scored twice from corners, and McIntyre added one more. In Hockey One a field goal plus its conversion counts double, which is how the Pride ran it up to seven without any one player running riot.

What it means

The Blaze shootout win keeps them in touch in a tight women’s race, while the Tigers will feel they let two points slip at home. For Adelaide, it’s another heavy defeat in a season that’s already had a few. The Pride, on the other hand, look like a side finding their scoring touch at exactly the right time.

Both teams in Hobart are back in action in the next round, and the Blaze in particular will take real confidence from winning a shootout on the road. Shootouts decide so much in this league. Winning one away from home is worth more than the single extra point.
