Wednesday’s Leftovers: Lynchburg Stun No. 19 Washington and Lee in Overtime, Chilton and Michael Hit Hat-Tricks
Twenty seconds. That’s all Washington and Lee needed, and it still wasn’t enough.
The No. 19 Generals were 20 seconds from a damaging conference defeat at Lynchburg when senior Zoe Dolfis buried an equaliser at 59:40 to force overtime. Lynchburg had just gone ahead through Taylor Secrist’s second goal of the night, and Washington and Lee looked beaten. Dolfis had other ideas, Libby Bowers found her, and suddenly a seven-game winning streak had a second life.
It lasted seven minutes. Khanyisile Mzizi scored the golden goal at 67:11, off a penalty corner and a pass from Allie Freeman, and unranked Lynchburg had a 3-2 win over the ranked side in a battle of Old Dominion Athletic Conference unbeatens. Lynchburg stay perfect in the league at 7-0, and they’re 12-5 overall. Washington and Lee drop to 11-4 and 6-1 in the ODAC, their first conference loss of the season. Madeline Lancione had put the Generals ahead in the third quarter, Secrist levelled it, and Secrist struck again with 1:56 left. The shots were almost dead even, 12-11 to Washington and Lee, and both sides put nine on target. Lynchburg had the corners, 9-5. On a night like that, the team that takes the last one wins, and Lynchburg did.
Johns Hopkins didn’t need any drama at all. The No. 9 Blue Jays beat Gettysburg 6-0 in Baltimore, and Sarah Chilton did most of the damage herself. Eliza Vander opened it from a corner in the sixth minute, Chilton dribbled through traffic to make it 2-0 in the 17th, and then three goals in the third quarter blew the game open. Chilton scored from the middle of the circle in the 37th, Ava Zimmerman knocked in a rebound in the 42nd, and Chilton finished her hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 44th. Emma Scheckner made it six in the 58th. Johns Hopkins outshot Gettysburg 15-9 and won the corners 10-4, and they’re 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference. Gettysburg, 9-7 and 3-6 in the league, finish their season at Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 1pm local time.
Alvernia’s hat-trick was even faster. Ava Michael scored 52 seconds into the game at Eastern, off a Caroline Martin assist, and the Golden Wolves never looked back in a 6-0 MAC Commonwealth win. Sofia Mollura redirected a Michael effort to make it 2-0, Michael pounced on a rebound after a Carley Mackert shot was saved for 3-0 before the first quarter ended, Matisyn Derkacs lifted one over the Eastern defence early in the second for 4-0, Michael completed her hat-trick off another Martin assist in the third, and Sarah Schaffer finished it late off Reese Wilkinson’s first collegiate point. Michael finished with three goals and an assist, and all five of her shots were on target. Jazmin Mayfield made five saves for the shutout. The win clinches Alvernia a MAC Commonwealth playoff spot, and Saturday’s trip to Widener is now for the No. 4 seed and a home play-in game. Alvernia are 8-8 and 4-3 in the league. Eastern, 10-7 and 3-4, will be kicking themselves. They conceded three in the first quarter and never got into it.
Ohio Wesleyan are rolling. The Battling Bishops beat Wooster 6-1 on the road for a fourth straight win, and they did it by burying the game before half-time. Emma Reynolds scored in the third minute and again in the 13th, both times assisted by Grace Ammon, and by the half-hour mark it was 5-0. Reagan Shifflett scored in the 25th, Ammon got one herself in the 28th, and Mary Powers added the fifth in the 30th. Wooster pulled one back in the 35th, and Mattison Hyland restored the five-goal margin two minutes later, off Ammon’s third assist of the night. The numbers tell the story: 35 shots to five, 21 on target to three, nine penalty corners to none. Powers has 20 goals for the season now, which ties her for third on Ohio Wesleyan’s single-season list. Ammon has nine goals and 11 assists for 29 points, and Hyland reached 10 goals and 20 points. The Bishops are 13-4 and 7-2 in the NCAC, and they host Wittenberg on Saturday at 11am local time in their last regular-season game. Wooster are 4-9 and 3-6.
Montclair State won the fast-start award. The Red Hawks scored three times in the opening five minutes at Ramapo, two of them from Natalie Surma, and the game was effectively over before Ramapo had settled. The second quarter went scoreless, Colleen McGavin made it 4-0 in the 37th minute, Savannah Davis converted a penalty stroke in the 44th for her first goal of the season, and Montclair added a fifth to finish 5-1 in NJAC play. Montclair are 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Ramapo are 3-11 and 0-6 in the league, and a five-minute spell at the start cost them the whole night.
And the strangest game of the night ended without a goal in open play at all. Delaware Valley and FDU-Florham played 80 scoreless minutes in Madison, New Jersey, through regulation and two overtime periods, and then went to a shootout. Gracyn Shutt stopped all five FDU-Florham attempts. Ava Smadi and Savannah Weaver scored theirs, and DelVal had a season-finale win to remember. Shutt played 50 minutes and made one save in open play, Shaelynn Castanaga-Acerra played the first 30 without facing a shot, and DelVal finish 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the MAC Freedom. Not a classic. But a shootout win to end the season beats a scoreless draw every time.
