Argentina's Los Leones celebrate a goal

Vélez Are Back in Primera A: 3-0 Win Seals a Third Spell in Argentina’s Top Flight

San Fernando won’t be the only new face in Primera A next year. Vélez Sarsfield are going up with them.

Vélez’s men beat AACF Quilmes 3-0 on Sunday at the Parque Olímpico in a rearranged fixture, and that was the result that locked it. Emanuel Baquero scored twice, Nahuel Gómez got the other, and second place in Primera B was theirs with a round still to play.

The numbers behind the campaign are tidy. Forty-seven points from 17 matches for Javier Braña’s side, 14 wins and just three defeats, promotion sealed alongside division leaders San Fernando, who’d already booked their own return.

This is Vélez’s third spell in the metropolitan top flight. They first went up in 2015, again in 2019, and that second stay lasted until relegation in November 2022. Four years down, and now back up. Clubs like Vélez, a football giant with a proper hockey section that’s been affiliated to the Buenos Aires association since 1996, tend to bounce. The trick, as they know better than anyone, is staying there this time. The full league picture sits on our Leagues page.
