Hockey One Round 4: Unbeaten Canberra and HC Melbourne Collide, Cobras Chase a First Win in Perth
Round 4 is the one that sorts the Hockey One season out. The two unbeaten men’s sides meet. The unbeaten women’s side go to Perth. And the new club get one more shot at a first win.
It starts in Canberra on Friday. Canberra Chill host HC Melbourne in a men’s and women’s double-header at EPC Solar Hockey Stadium, the men at 12:00pm PKT and the women at 1:45pm PKT. Both men’s sides are 3-0. Somebody’s perfect record ends on Friday, and for our money the home crowd might just tip it Canberra’s way. HC Melbourne have made a habit of winning ugly, though. Their Round 3 derby comeback, from 5-4 down at the 54th minute to an 8-5 win over the Cobras, said plenty about what they’re made of.
Saturday brings two more double-headers. Tassie Tigers host Brisbane Blaze in Hobart, the women at 7:00am PKT and the men at 8:45am PKT. Then Adelaide Fire welcome NSW Pride at the State Hockey Centre, the women at 12:00pm PKT and the men at 1:45pm PKT. Brisbane’s men arrive in Hobart with serious momentum after putting ten past Adelaide in Round 3, ten unanswered goals after falling behind in the fourth minute. Adelaide, beaten 10-1 in that one and 3-0 by the Blaze women, need a response at home. Pride won’t make it easy. They’ve been in every game they’ve played.
Sunday closes the round in Perth. The Thundersticks host the Melbourne Cobras at Perth Hockey Stadium, the women at 11:00am PKT and the men at 12:45pm PKT. The Thundersticks women are the league’s other perfect side, 3-0 and looking every bit the champions from last season. The Cobras men are still chasing their first win after three defeats, and Perth away is about as tough as it gets. If the Cobras are going to announce themselves in this league, this is the weekend to do it. Nobody will expect it. That’s exactly when these things happen.
Round 3 set all this up nicely. Four clean sweeps across the round, 35 goals in the men’s games and 17 in the women’s, and three perfect starts: the Thundersticks women plus the Chill and HC Melbourne men. The top four at the end of the pool stage reach the semi-finals, so every one of these eight games matters. Canberra against HC Melbourne is the headline, but don’t sleep on Hobart. The Tigers men beat Brisbane in last year’s semi-final, and Brisbane won’t have forgotten it.
Every match streams live and free on 7plus in Australia and internationally through the Hockey One Global Pass. The finals weekend is 5-6 December on the Gold Coast.
