Tigers Bite Back in Hobart: Stebbings and Hazell Strike Late as Tassie Beat Brisbane Blaze 4-1

Brisbane led in Hobart. Then the last 11 minutes happened.

Joel Rintala put the Blaze in front in the 12th minute, and for most of the afternoon that looked like it might be enough. Tassie had lost their unbeaten start to Canberra last week, and this had the feel of another frustrating day. It wasn’t.

Ollie Stebbings changed it in the 49th minute. His field goal, plus the conversion that follows a field goal in Hockey One, made it 2-1 in one swing. Four minutes later Ehren Hazell did exactly the same thing, a field goal and a conversion, and a 1-0 deficit was suddenly a 4-1 win.

That’s the cruelty of this league’s scoring. One open-play goal can be worth two, and two of them in four minutes bury a team that was ahead for 37 minutes.

What it means

The Tigers move to nine points from four games, second in the men’s ladder behind only HC Melbourne. They’ve now won three of four, and their goal difference, plus 12, is the second best in the league. Brisbane, meanwhile, stay stuck on three points from four games. They beat Adelaide Fire 10-1 last week, but they’ve lost the other three, and this was a game they led.

For our money, Tassie look like the real challengers to Melbourne right now. They’ve got the firepower, Hazell is right up there in the scoring charts, and they’ve bounced straight back from the Canberra defeat. Brisbane need to find a way to hold a lead. Twice now they’ve been in games and let them go late.

What’s next

Hockey One Round 4 isn’t done yet. On Sunday the Perth Thundersticks host the Melbourne Cobras in Perth.
