Harrisburg and St Mary’s Cruise Into the United East Final

No drama in the United East semi-finals. Just two favourites doing exactly what favourites are supposed to do.

Top seed Penn State Harrisburg beat Wilson 5-2 to reach the conference final for the second year running, and defending champions St Mary’s College of Maryland beat Lancaster Bible 5-1. The two meet in the final on Saturday 7 November, hosted by Harrisburg as the top seed.

Moyer runs the show

Harrisburg never really let Wilson breathe. Victoria Castano Colman opened the scoring in the 10th minute, set up by Astrid Comp and Sadie Cook, and although Danica Frushour levelled two minutes later, the Lions pulled away from there. Castano Colman and Anna Moyer scored two each, Alysa McCarthy added the other, and Moyer finished with five points on the day. Wilson’s Kate Seymour cut it to two early in the fourth quarter, but Moyer answered less than two minutes later to kill the comeback dead.

The numbers tell the story: Harrisburg outshot Wilson 9-4 and won the corner count 8-3. The Lions are 11-5 now, and they’re chasing their first-ever conference title. Standing in the way are the team that already own one.

St Mary’s mean business

St Mary’s struck first in the ninth minute, Emma Mastrangelo finding Olivia Schwendeman for her seventh goal of the season, and the Seahawks never looked back. Safi Stimely and Schwendeman added late goals to seal a 5-1 win over a Lancaster Bible side that had only just won the first playoff game in their history, 2-0 over Cedar Crest in the first round.

So it’s the top seed against the defending champions, at Harrisburg, on Saturday. First-ever title against a repeat. For our money, that’s as good as a Division III final gets.
