CHL Night 8: Strikers Stun Titans 4-0 and Bulls Hit Champions for Six as the Semi-Final Race Goes to a Tie

Friday in Raipur was supposed to be a coronation of sorts for the Mainpat Titans. Win, and they would join the Knights on eleven points at the top. Instead, the rearranged Night 8 turned into the night the whole league got turned upside down.

Start with the shock. The Sanskardhani Strikers, who had won once all tournament, beat the Titans 4-0. Not a scrappy 1-0, not a shootout, a four-goal win, celebrated by the league itself as the Strikers ending their league campaign on a high. The Titans, who had come from behind to draw with the Knights on Night 7, never got going. They stay on eight points, and a night that could have taken them level at the top instead leaves them looking over their shoulders.

Then the second game, which was somehow even louder. The Bailadila Bulls beat the Chakradhar Champions 6-2, leading 3-1 at half time and never letting up. That is two wins in a row for the Bulls, after their first win of the season on Night 7, a 1-0 win over the Royals. A team that had five points two nights ago now has eight, level with the Titans. The Champions, who started the night on seven, stay on seven, and their semi-final hopes now depend on someone else’s arithmetic.

So here is where the table stands going into Saturday’s semi-finals. The Nyayadhani Knights are top on eleven and already through. The Titans and the Bulls are level on eight. The Strikers and the Champions are level on seven. The Rajdhani Royals are bottom on zero. The league has not yet confirmed the semi-final pairings, and with the Strikers and the Champions finishing level, that confirmation matters more than usual. One of them gets the last semi-final place, and the other goes home.

For our money, the Strikers are the story of the night. A side with nothing to lose, on a rearranged night, after a cyclone, beating the team chasing top spot by four goals. That is the kind of result that makes a league. Saturday’s semi-finals will tell us whether it was also the result that changed who lifts the trophy on Sunday.
