US College Saturday: Smith’s Double Blanks Dartmouth for Brown, DeSales Edge Marywood 1-0 Into the MAC Freedom Semis
Two Saturday games in the US, two shutouts, and two very different ways of getting there.
Brown did it with a late flurry in each half. At Goldberger Family Field in Providence, Dartmouth actually outshot the Bears 5-2 in the first quarter and Brown couldn’t turn three penalty corners into a goal. Then, with 50 seconds left in the second quarter, Sophia Clark broke the deadlock from a penalty corner, assisted by Mia Karine Myklebust, and Brown went in 1-0 up.
Kiersten Smith took it from there. She doubled the lead with four seconds left in the third quarter, assisted by Emily Jury, then sealed it with 7:21 left in the fourth for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Ellie Parker made seven saves for her first shutout of the campaign, with Kate Lahoti adding a defensive save and an assist. Brown finish at 5-11 overall, 2-5 in the Ivy League, Dartmouth at 6-10, 2-5. Neither side’s season ends in glory, but a 3-0 Ivy win with a first shutout for your keeper is a decent way to sign off a Saturday.
DeSales had to wait longer, and work harder, for their one goal. In Center Valley, Pennsylvania, the Bulldogs and Marywood were scoreless at half-time despite DeSales corners and a defensive save from Marywood’s Caitlin Petersen. Five minutes into the third quarter, first-year Shelby Haldeman broke away down the right, drew the keeper out and tucked it into the lower right corner. That was that.
Lily Trocki made six saves for another DeSales shutout, Haldeman led the Bulldogs with four shots, and Marywood keeper Sabrina Frazer matched Trocki with six saves of her own. DeSales outshot Marywood 14-10, corners finished 9-9, and the Bulldogs’ 11-4 head-to-head edge over the Pacers held up. DeSales close the regular season 10-7, 7-1 in MAC Freedom play, Marywood 9-9, 3-5, and the win sends DeSales into Wednesday’s MAC Freedom semi-final at home against Lebanon Valley College at 7:00pm.
Two clean sheets, two keepers in form, and for DeSales, a semi-final to look forward to. Brown’s season won’t be remembered for the record, but Smith’s double is the kind of finish that sticks with a squad.
