Division III Saturday: Susquehanna Stun Wilkes 1-0, Saint Joseph’s Win in Double Overtime, Mercy and Rochester Post Shutouts

Saturday’s Division III card gave us an upset, a double-overtime winner and two shutouts, and the best story of the lot came in Pennsylvania.

Sixth-seeded Susquehanna went to second-seeded Wilkes in the Landmark Conference first round and won 1-0, ending Wilkes’ season in the first postseason game the programme had ever hosted. Kiara Koeller scored the only goal with 2:39 left in the first quarter, finishing a loose ball from the right side just outside the circle with a backhand into the cage. Wilkes pressed after that, outshooting Susquehanna 11-10 and winning corners 7-4, with close chances from Emma Lautenbacher and Maddie Karp saved and Karp shooting just wide late in the fourth. Taytum Lombardi made six saves for the Susquehanna shutout, Chloe Gilroy matched her with six for Wilkes. Susquehanna, now 8-12, go to the Landmark semi-finals on Tuesday against Catholic University. Wilkes finish 11-8, and that’s a brutal way for a hosting debut to end.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine needed even longer to get through. The fourth-seeded Monks beat fifth-seeded New England College 1-0 in a GNAC quarter-final in Standish, with junior Zoey Lailer scoring 54 seconds into double overtime, at 70:54, her fifth goal of the season. The move came off a penalty corner: Myia SeeHusen inserted at 70:34, Ava Markham had a shot blocked, then set up Lailer. Saint Joseph’s outshot NEC 14-9 in total and 5-0 across the two extra periods, with Kimberley McLaughlin making four saves for the shutout and NEC’s Annie Raduazzo seven. The Monks, now 10-9, reach the GNAC semi-finals for a third straight season and play at top-seeded Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday. NEC finish 10-8, and their season is over. These two clearly can’t play a normal game against each other: their October meeting also needed double overtime, Markham winning that one 2-1.

The other two Saturday winners didn’t need extra time at all. Mercy beat Dominican University New York 2-0 in ECC play in Dobbs Ferry, Madison Brefka scoring unassisted in the second quarter for the winner and Addison Testa adding insurance in the fourth, assisted by Gwendolyn Smith. Mercy keeper Kaylise McClure made 16 saves in the shutout while Dominican took 22 shots, their third-highest total of the season, and still couldn’t score. Mercy move to 7-7, 6-2 in the ECC, with a season-series sweep over Dominican, who fall to 5-10, 4-4 and host Molloy on Wednesday.

And Rochester beat William Smith 3-0 in a Liberty League regular-season finale that sets up an immediate rematch. The Yellowjackets outshot the Herons 9-5, with seven shots on target to William Smith’s one, and sealed it two minutes into the fourth quarter when Grayson Honig fed Sophia Cuneo off a penalty corner. Rochester finish 12-6, 4-3 in the league; William Smith 9-10, 3-4, and clinch the No. 5 seed, which sends them straight back to Rochester on Tuesday, 3 November, for a Liberty League first-round game against the fourth-seeded Yellowjackets. Same ground, same opponent, three days later. That’s a quick chance at revenge.
