Chhattisgarh League Night 6: Walmiki’s Hat-Trick Denies Knights as Strikers Finally Win
Eight goals, two penalty strokes and a hat-trick. The first game of Night 6 in Raipur had everything, and neither side blinked. Nyayadhani Knights and Chakradhar Champions finished 4-4 on Tuesday night, and the Knights will feel it was two points dropped. They led 2-1 at half-time through Adarsh and Sonu Nishad, both set up by Ketan, who beat four defenders down the right for the first and came in from the left for the second. Ketan scored himself in the third quarter as the Knights pushed for the win. Yuvraj Walmiki had other ideas. He scored twice from penalty strokes and once from open play, a reverse flick after Sunil fed him just outside the circle, to complete his second hat-trick of the tournament. He nearly had a fourth too. Khogeshwar’s deflection gave the Champions their fourth goal and a point they had to fight for.
The draw is still enough for the Knights. They stay top of the table and have secured their semi-final place. But the Champions showed the rest of the league something useful: the leaders can be got at, and Walmiki is the man to do it.
The second game belonged to the Strikers at last. Sanskardhani Strikers beat Rajdhani Royals 4-2 for their first win of the tournament, and they did it the hard way after three winless games. Ashish Tani Purti opened the scoring from a penalty corner and converted another one later to take his tournament tally to nine goals. Shahrukh scored twice, the second with a minute left in the third quarter from a pass right in front of goal, and the Strikers never looked back from there. Raushan pulled one back for the Royals just before half-time with a fine reverse after dodging through the circle, and Lalit scored from a penalty corner rebound late on. It wasn’t enough. The Royals are still waiting for a win, and their defence will hate the sight of Shahrukh left unmarked in the circle. That one mistake turned the game. Ashish took the striker of the match award and Shahrukh was player of the match. Both deserved. The Strikers are alive now, and with two league games left they have given themselves a real shot at the semi-finals.
Wednesday is the big one. The Knights meet Mainpat Titans in a top-of-the-table clash, and the Royals face Bailadila Bulls with both sides still hunting a first win. The semi-finals are on 31 October, with the final on 1 November.
