England Men’s Premier Division Round 5: Surbiton and East Grinstead Defend Perfect Starts on Saturday

It’s taken until Thursday to say this with confidence, but the full Round 5 card for the men’s Premier Division is set, and it’s a Saturday-only round. Six games, two perfect records on the line, and a top-of-the-table picture that will look different by Saturday night whatever happens.

Last weekend set this up beautifully. Round 4 produced six away wins and 32 goals. Six. Every single home side lost. Surbiton won 6-1 at Oxted with two from Max Anderson, Wimbledon hit seven at Bowdon with a Sam Hooper hat-trick, and East Grinstead won 2-1 at Exeter to keep their own perfect start. So the two teams who haven’t dropped a point, Surbiton and East Grinstead, both play at home this week. After Round 4, home advantage clearly isn’t worth much. That’s the fun of it.

The perfect starters are at home

Surbiton host Bowdon at 15:30, and Bowdon’s problem is obvious: they conceded seven last week. Against a Surbiton side that put six past Oxted, that defence needs a very different afternoon. Bowdon can score, they got two against Wimbledon, but this feels like a game where they need the first goal or it runs away from them.

East Grinstead host Cardiff & Met at 15:00. Cardiff were beaten 3-0 at home by Hampstead & Westminster last week, Samuel French scoring twice, so they travel with something to fix at both ends. Grinstead’s start has been quieter than Surbiton’s but just as effective, four from four, and a win here keeps the pressure exactly where they want it.

The rest of Saturday

Old Georgians v Reading opens the round at 14:30 at St George’s College. Georgians won 4-1 at Beeston last week with two from Henry Croft and they’re the side most people expect to be standing at the end of this season. Reading lost a five-goal game to Holcombe, who took their first points of the season in it, so Reading need a response and have picked a tough place to look for one.

Wimbledon v University of Exeter (15:30) pairs last week’s seven-goal winners with the students who pushed East Grinstead close. Hampstead & Westminster v Oxted (16:00) sends Oxted, still stinging from the Surbiton game, to Paddington Rec against a Hampstead side fresh off a clean-sheet win in Cardiff. Holcombe v Beeston (17:00) closes the day: Holcombe finally have points, Beeston were beaten at home last week and can’t afford for this to become a habit.

Saturday 24 October: Old Georgians v Reading 14:30 · East Grinstead v Cardiff & Met 15:00 · Wimbledon v University of Exeter 15:30 · Surbiton v Bowdon 15:30 · Hampstead & Westminster v Oxted 16:00 · Holcombe v Beeston 17:00.
