Germany players celebrate with their World Cup gold medals

400 Million Watched: The Hockey World Cup Posted Its Biggest Numbers Ever

Hockey just had its biggest audience ever, and the numbers are not close.

The 2026 men’s and women’s World Cups in Belgium and the Netherlands reached a television audience of 403.3 million, the FIH reported in October, with more than 223 million social media views across the tournament. It is the kind of figure that changes how a sport talks about itself, and FIH president Tayyab Ikram has called it momentum for hockey’s global growth.

The figures come from international audience research specialists GSIQ, and they cover live broadcasts, highlights, delayed coverage and repeats. The tournament ran for more than two weeks and finished with two finals on 30 August. Watch.Hockey, the FIH’s streaming platform, added more than a million views and over 20 million minutes watched between 15 August and 1 September, averaging around 20 minutes per view. That is not people clicking past a clip. That is people sitting down and watching hockey.

The timing matters. The World Cup was the shop window for a sport heading into a packed cycle: the Pro League starts again on 8 December in Argentina, the Nations Cup and Nations Cup 2 sit below it, and the road runs through Los Angeles 2028 and on to Brisbane 2032. A record audience gives the FIH something concrete to take into every broadcast and sponsorship conversation from here.

It also fits a pattern. Watch.Hockey has been expanding beyond FIH events to cover continental federation competitions, which means more hockey is available to more people in more places than ever before. The audience is there. The job now is keeping it.

For a sport that is so often described as niche, 403 million is a loud answer. The next test is turning a record World Cup into a habit, starting with the Pro League in December.
