Railways Leave It Late: Simranjot’s 59th-Minute Corner Sinks Karnataka at the Murugappa Gold Cup
Fifty-nine minutes of nothing, then one corner decided it.
Indian Railways and Hockey Karnataka went at each other for three full quarters at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Monday and neither defence blinked. Goalless at the end of the third quarter, with the game drifting towards a draw that would have suited Karnataka far more than the defending champions.
Then Railways won a penalty corner in the final minute. Simranjot Singh stepped up, found his range, and that was that. Railways 1-0, and three more points in Pool A.
It’s the kind of win that tells you plenty about a side. Railways weren’t at their best. They didn’t create much. But championship teams find a way when the game is going nowhere, and Simranjot’s corner was the one moment of real quality in an otherwise grinding afternoon.
The result keeps Railways firmly in control of their own semi-final destiny. Karnataka, meanwhile, are left to rue a game they defended so well for so long. One lapse, one corner, one goal. That’s hockey at this level, and it can be brutal.
The day’s other two games were far more open, and both went the way of the form teams.
Indian Army beat Punjab National Bank in the early game, and BPCL beat Malaysia’s juniors 1-0 in the late one, Sudeep Chirmako scoring inside three minutes for his side’s third straight win in Pool B. BPCL look like the team to beat right now. They’ve made a habit of scoring early and then making it stick, and Malaysia, two days removed from lifting the Sultan of Johor Cup in a different country, simply ran out of legs.
The semi-finals are on 31 October, with the final under lights on 1 November. Railways will fancy their chances of being there. On Monday’s evidence, they don’t need to be brilliant to win. They just need one corner.
