Dominican Come From Behind Twice to Beat Maryville 3-2 in Overtime as Snijder Settles It
Some wins feel bigger than the scoreline. Dominican University New York’s 3-2 overtime win over Maryville on Monday felt like one of those.
Maryville struck first. Consuelo Torres Moore scored late in the first quarter, in the 9th minute, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Dominican answered in the second quarter, when Iris Kuper found the net from a penalty corner off a pass from Lea Pilsl in the 28th minute.
Then Maryville struck again. Denise Van der Spuy scored with less than a minute left in the third quarter to make it 2-1, and Dominican were chasing the game again.
They chased it down. Saniyah Hines tipped one in during the fourth quarter, in the 54th minute, with Bodille Snijder picking up the assist, and the game went to overtime.
It didn’t last long. Just 3:27 into overtime, Dominican were awarded their 11th and final penalty corner of the game. Annabelle Docksteader found Snijder, and Snijder scored the winner. Twice behind, twice level, and then the win. That’s a good day’s work.
The numbers back it up. Dominican outshot Maryville 17-12 and edged the corner count 11-10. Ashlynn Proper got her first start of the season and played the whole first half, then Tara Costello came in at half-time, played through overtime and picked up the win. Maryville goalkeeper Jojo Cox made six saves and took the loss.
Dominican improved to 4-9 overall, and they’ve now won their last three games. Maryville fall to 3-11. Dominican return to conference play on Wednesday, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Three wins in a row changes a season’s feel. Dominican were 1-9 not long ago. Now they’re the team nobody wants to play in conference.
