EYHL Round 6: Lisnagarvey and Pembroke Stay Level, Corinthian Stun Banbridge
Round 6 of the EY Hockey League did exactly what a good league weekend should do: it kept the top tight and threw in a proper upset.
Lisnagarvey are still top, but only just. The reigning champions came through a closely fought battle away at YMCA, 2-1, and Pembroke Wanderers matched them with a narrow 1-0 win at Portrane. Both sit on 14 points. Nothing between them, and the chasing pack is right there.
Corinthian’s statement win
The result of the round came at Corinthian, where the hosts stunned visiting Banbridge 2-1 thanks to an Ian Stewart brace. Banbridge are supposed to be title contenders. Corinthian just beat them, and suddenly the table looks very different: Corinthian up to nine points, Banbridge stuck on nine too, both looking over their shoulders.
Avoca’s away form keeps impressing. They came from a goal behind at Cork Harlequins to win 2-1 and climb into the top four on 11 points, level with Three Rock Rovers. The other top-four hopefuls, Monkstown and Three Rock, shared the points in a 2-2 draw at Rathdown, with Three Rock taking the bonus point from the shootout to stay within touching distance of the leaders.
The table after Round 6
Lisnagarvey 14, Pembroke Wanderers 14, Three Rock Rovers 11, Avoca 11, Banbridge 9, Corinthian 9, YMCA 8, Monkstown 5, Cork Harlequins 3, Portrane 3.
For our money, this is now a two-horse race at the top with a very angry chasing pack. Pembroke have matched Garvey stride for stride, and the next round of head-to-heads is going to matter a lot.
Women’s Round 6 in brief
Railway Union extended their lead at the top to five points with a 3-0 win away at Queen’s University, their fifth win of the season. Ards ended Pembroke Wanderers’ unbeaten start with a 1-0 win to climb to third, Loreto came from behind at Pegasus to win 2-1 and re-enter the top four, and Monkstown beat UCD 2-1 to bolster their survival hopes. Portadown’s 3-2 comeback win at Old Alex was covered in our Saturday evening piece.
Women’s table: Railway Union 17, Pembroke Wanderers 12, Ards 12, Loreto 11, Queen’s University 9, Old Alex 7, Portadown 7, UCD 6, Monkstown 6, Pegasus 3.
