England Round 7: Old Georgians Hit Exeter for Eight, Surbiton Win at Beeston

The men’s Premier Division Round 7 is complete, and the big guns did not mess about.

Old Georgians, the champions, went to Exeter University and won 8-1. That’s a statement, not a result. Exeter are new to the top flight this season, and they just found out what the top of the table looks like up close.

Surbiton kept pace with a 3-1 win at Beeston, and Hampstead and Westminster were even more emphatic, winning 7-1 at Bowdon. Wimbledon put six past East Grinstead, 6-1, in the highest-scoring game of the round that didn’t involve the champions. Reading edged Cardiff 3-2, and Holcombe won a thriller at Oxted, 6-5, the kind of game where both defences will want to forget the second half.

For our money, the gap is starting to show. Old Georgians and Surbiton are playing a different game to the rest right now, and the teams below them are fighting over the scraps. Exeter will learn from the 8-1. Bowdon, beaten 7-1 at home, have a harder week ahead.

All six men’s scores, and the two late women’s results below, come from the league’s results listings, with no club report yet published for the round.

Women’s late games confirmed

The two women’s games that were still outstanding from Saturday are also settled now. Durham lost 1-0 at home to Birmingham, and Surbiton beat Nottingham University 6-1. The other four women’s Round 7 games (Buckingham 0-3 Reading, Teddington 0-1 Loughborough, Bowdon 1-1 Hampstead and Westminster, Wimbledon 1-3 East Grinstead) were covered in our Saturday evening piece.

Round 8 of both Premier Divisions is on Saturday 7 November.
