German Bundesliga Men: Polo Club Win a 6-4 Shootout, Alster and Köln Edge Thrillers on Saturday
Saturday in the German Bundesliga men’s league gave us goals everywhere and not a single comfortable win. Six games, all finished, and three of them decided by a single goal.
The highest scoring game of the day was in Munich, where Hamburger Polo Club beat Münchner 6-4. Ten goals, no let-up, and Polo Club taking the points on the road. That’s the kind of win that tells you a side means business, even this early in the season.
Alster had to work just as hard in Berlin, edging Berliner 4-3. One goal in it, right to the end, and Alster held on. Köln did something similar at Mannheimer, winning 3-2 in another game that could have gone either way. When three of the day’s games finish 4-3, 3-2 and 5-4, you know it was a proper Saturday of hockey, not a procession.
That 5-4 was Crefelder’s win at Mannheim, the second-highest scoring game of the card. Harvestehuder’s 2-0 win over Mülheim was the exception, the only clean sheet of the day, and sometimes a shutout says more than a shootout. UHC Hamburg rounded it out with a 4-1 win over DSD Düsseldorf, the most comfortable margin anywhere on Saturday.
Saturday’s scores
Münchner 4-6 Hamburger Polo Club
Berliner 3-4 Alster
Mannheimer 2-3 Köln
Harvestehuder 2-0 Mülheim
Mannheim 4-5 Crefelder
UHC Hamburg 4-1 DSD Düsseldorf
No one ran away with it, and that’s the point. Polo Club’s six goals will grab the headlines, but Alster, Köln and Crefelder all winning tight games on the road is what shapes a title race. The next round will tell us whether Saturday’s winners can do it again, or whether the teams they beat bounce straight back.
