ACT Rest Day Verdict: India and Malaysia Are Through, Harmanpreet Leads the Scoring, and Sunday Decides the Rest
Nine games in, no draws, 54 goals. That’s the Asian Champions Trophy so far, and Saturday’s rest day is a good moment to take stock before it all gets serious again.
India and Malaysia are already through. Both have won all three of their games, and India sit top on goal difference, plus 19 to Malaysia’s plus 8. India have scored 22 and conceded just three. Malaysia have 14 for and six against. Sunday’s meeting between them at 6:30pm PKT decides top spot, and a draw keeps India first.
Behind them, it’s a proper scrap. Japan are third on six points after two wins, South Korea fourth on three after finally beating China on Friday. China and Bangladesh are still on zero, and the fifth and sixth placed teams at the end of the pool stage play off for fifth, so nobody’s just playing for pride yet.
Sunday settles most of it. South Korea against Bangladesh opens at 2:00pm PKT, and Korea need the win to stay in the hunt. China against Japan follows at 4:15pm PKT, and that’s the real semi-final decider: Japan go through with a win, China have to win to stay alive. Then Malaysia against India under the lights.
The scoring chart tells its own story. India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh leads it on five goals in three games. Malaysia’s Abu Kamal Azrai is next on four. Mandeep Singh and Abhishek for India, plus Akhimullah and Azimuddin for Malaysia, all have three each. Mandeep’s hat-trick against Bangladesh in the opener is still the only treble of the tournament.
The numbers behind the noise
It’s been a goals tournament, six a game on average. Twenty-eight have come from open play, 23 from penalty corners and three from penalty strokes. Only India and Japan have kept a clean sheet, and both did it against Bangladesh, who have scored once and conceded 20.
For our money, India against Malaysia on Sunday is the game of the pool stage, not just because top spot is on the line but because it’s the first time either side has been properly tested. Malaysia’s 5-4 win over China on day one showed they can win a shootout of a game. India’s 13-0 against Bangladesh and 4-1 against Japan showed they can do it both ways.
Monday finishes the pool stage: China against Bangladesh at 2:00pm PKT, Malaysia against Japan at 4:15pm PKT, and India against South Korea at 6:30pm PKT. Then it’s off to Mohali, with the semi-finals on Wednesday 4 November and the medal matches on Thursday 5 November. Two spots are gone. Two more are up for grabs, and Sunday is when we find out who wants them most.
