Hockey One Men’s Ladder After Saturday: Melbourne Clear, Tigers Second, and Pride Can Join Them Tonight
Saturday’s results in Hobart have sharpened the Hockey One men’s ladder, with two men’s games still to come in Round 4: Pride v Fire on Saturday night and Perth v Cobras on Sunday.
HC Melbourne stay top on 12 points from four straight wins, with 28 goals scored and 12 conceded. They’ve been the best team in the league by a distance, and Friday’s 10-2 win in Canberra was the loudest statement of the season so far.
Tassie Tigers are second now, on nine points from four games, after their 4-1 win over Brisbane Blaze in Hobart. Canberra Chill are also on nine, but the Tigers’ goal difference, plus 12 against Canberra’s plus 3, puts them ahead. That’s a big swing in one afternoon.
The chasing pack
NSW Pride sit fourth on six points from three games, and they can join the Tigers and Canberra on nine if they beat Adelaide Fire in Adelaide on Saturday night, local time. The Fire are bottom on zero points, having conceded 28 goals in three games, so the Pride will be heavy favourites. But this league has already shown that favourites don’t always get it their way.
Brisbane Blaze are fifth on three points despite a plus 2 goal difference, which tells you how tight the middle is. Perth Thundersticks also have three points, from three games, and they host the Melbourne Cobras on Sunday. The Cobras and the Fire are both still on zero.
The scoring race
Nathan Ephraums of HC Melbourne leads the men’s scoring on 10 goals. Tassie’s Ehren Hazell is next on seven, after his late goal and conversion against Brisbane. With the top four only separated by a few points and the Pride still to play, Round 4 could easily end with three teams locked on nine points at the top.
For our money, Melbourne are still the team to catch. But the Tigers have just proved they can win a game they were losing, and if the Pride win in Adelaide, the top of this table gets very crowded very quickly.
