Belgium's Red Lions celebrate together

Braxgata Win Rearranged Orée Game 1-0 and Join Waterloo Ducks on 16 Points

The game that would not fit in the calendar finally got played, and Braxgata made it count. They beat Orée 1-0 away on Thursday night in the rearranged matchday 5 fixture, a game postponed because Orée were playing in the Euro Hockey League’s opening round in Eindhoven.

The scorer is not named in the records read for this piece, and this article does not guess at one. What is certain is the result and what it does to the table. Braxgata move to 16 points from seven games, five wins, a draw and a defeat, level with defending champions Waterloo Ducks. Léopold stay top on 17. Orée stay on seven points from seven games, one win, four draws and two defeats, in eighth place.

It is a useful win for Braxgata in more ways than one. They had already drawn 2-2 with Léopold, beaten Beerschot 4-2 and Daring 4-1, and the only defeat in their record is a 2-1 loss at Racing. Going to Orée, a side that had drawn four of their six games before Thursday, and keeping a clean sheet is exactly the kind of result that holds up over a long season. Orée do not lose often. They just do not win often enough either, and Thursday was another night where a draw slipped away.

The weekend comes fast. On Sunday, Braxgata host Dragons, Orée travel to Herakles, Gantoise host Racing, Beerschot host Daring, and Waterloo Ducks host Namur. It is a big weekend for the top of the table, with Braxgata and Waterloo both chasing leaders Léopold.

Braxgata against Dragons is the pick of it. Dragons sit tenth, in the relegation play-off place, with five points. But a home game against a struggling side is precisely where dropped points hurt most in a title race this tight. Braxgata will be favourites, and they should win. Thursday night in Brussels showed they can win ugly too. That combination is what wins leagues.
