U SPORTS Day 2: Toronto Hit Five Past UPEI, UBC Stun Hosts Waterloo 2-1

Day two shook this championship up. Toronto found their scoring boots, UBC beat the hosts, and now Saturday’s games decide who plays for gold on Sunday.

Toronto were the day’s big winners. The Varsity Blues beat UPEI 5-1 on Friday afternoon in Waterloo, after drawing their opener 1-1 with UBC on Thursday. That’s four points from two games for the OUA champions, and they look like the side to beat going into the weekend. UPEI, meanwhile, are now 0-2 after losing 4-0 to Waterloo on day one, and they’re playing for pride rather than a medal from here.

The evening game was the shock. UBC came from behind to beat hosts Waterloo 2-1 under the lights. Waterloo had looked unstoppable in their 4-0 opener, and Sierra Blackburn put them ahead again in the 13th minute. But Riley Brown levelled for UBC in the 34th, and Sydney Le won it in the 41st. That’s a huge result for the Canada West champions, and it blows the round robin wide open.

So after two rounds, Toronto and UBC both sit on four points, Waterloo have three, and UPEI have none. Toronto lead on goal difference, and Saturday settles everything.

Waterloo face Toronto at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday (midnight PKT), and that’s the game of the championship so far. The hosts need a win to keep their gold-medal hopes in their own hands. Toronto can all but book their place in the final with a win. Then UPEI meet UBC at 4:30 p.m. EST (2:30 a.m. PKT Sunday), with UBC knowing a win would put them on seven points and in a very strong position.

The medal games are on Sunday: bronze at noon EST, gold at 2:30 p.m. EST. Every game streams live on CBC Gem. After Friday night, nobody can call this one.
