Tufts Finish a Perfect Regular Season: 1-0 at Bowdoin, 15-0 and Top Seed in Hand
Fifteen played, fifteen won. Tufts closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win at Bowdoin on Tuesday night, and the unbeaten Jumbos go into the NESCAC tournament as the top seed, exactly where they wanted to be.
One goal decided it. Tufts outshot Bowdoin 16-4 and held a 4-1 edge in penalty corners, but Bowdoin hung in there all night and the game stayed one goal deep. That’s the kind of win that tells you more about a team than a blowout does. Tufts didn’t need to be brilliant. They needed to be organised, patient and hard to break down, and they were.
The numbers say it was control without quite turning into dominance. Sixteen shots, ten of them on target, against four shots and two on target for Bowdoin. Tufts had already clinched the top seed before this one, thanks to Saturday’s 3-2 comeback win at Williams, where Eleanor Luft scored once and set up two more. Tuesday was about finishing the job properly, and they did.
Bowdoin finish the regular season 12-3. They’ll be in the NESCAC tournament too, and on a different night that one goal might have gone their way. But this was Tufts’ night, and Tufts’ season so far: 15-0 overall, 10-0 in the conference, and a home quarter-final at Ounjian Field on Saturday. Win that, and they host the semi-finals and the championship game on 7-8 November as well.
For our money, the team to beat in Division III right now wears Tufts colours. Fifteen straight wins, a top seed, and home turf all the way through the conference tournament. That’s as good a position as any team in the country could ask for.
