Spain Jornada 8: Polo Host Leaders Terrassa as Junior Women Put a Perfect Record on the Line
Spain’s División de Honor hits Jornada 8 this weekend, and both leagues have a proper top-of-the-table game on Sunday.
The men’s headline is in Barcelona. RC Polo host leaders CD Terrassa at 12:30 CET (4:30pm PKT) on Sunday, and it’s a genuine title-race game. Terrassa sit top, but only just. Polo are one point behind them with a game in hand, so a home win puts Polo top.
Polo have been flying. They came through a double round with two big wins, 5-0 over Carpesa and 8-0 over Taburiente, and their attack is the sharpest in the league right now. Terrassa, by contrast, have wobbled. They took one point from their last two, a 0-0 draw with Junior and then a 4-3 derby defeat to Atlètic Terrassa. A win in Barcelona would steady them. A defeat hands Polo the lead.
Atlètic are the form side lurking just behind. They beat Barça 3-2 on Wednesday in a rearranged Jornada 3 game, their second win over a big name in a week after that 4-3 derby win over Terrassa. They’re on 12 points now, level with RS Tenis and Sanse Complutense, and they host Tenis on Sunday at noon. Three wins on the bounce would put them right in the mix.
Junior FC are the other unbeaten side to watch. Four wins and two draws, a game in hand, and they host bottom side Sardinero on Sunday. Sardinero are still without a point and this is about as tough a trip as it gets. Real Club de Campo, the defending champions, sit fourth on 13 points and travel to Taburiente on Sunday morning, 11:45 Canary time. Taburiente are still chasing a first win of the season.
Over in the Liga Iberdrola, the game of the weekend is Sanse Complutense v Junior FC on Sunday at 12:45 CET. Junior have won all six of their games. Complutense are third on 16 points. Both sides took maximum points from last weekend’s double round, Complutense beating Sardinero and Tenis without conceding, Junior beating Valencia and Polo. A Junior win keeps the perfect record alive and keeps the pressure on the leaders. A Complutense win takes them above Junior.
The leaders are Club de Campo, on 19 points with a game more played than Junior. They host Atlètic Terrassa on Sunday at 12:30 CET in a rematch of last season’s final. Campo beat Tenis and Sardinero in the double round, while Atlètic won both of theirs too, 3-0 over Polo and 4-0 over Valencia. The champions are unbeaten, but Atlètic are coming in hot.
The round opens on Saturday. RC Polo host Club Egara at 13:45 CET, then Real Sociedad play Sardinero and Valencia host CD Terrassa, both at 16:00. Sunday starts early in the Canaries, Taburiente v RS Tenis at 10:00 CET, with Tenis seventh on 10 points and Taburiente still looking for their first points of the season.
