Surbiton Hit Nine, Old Georgians and East Grinstead Held in England’s Premier Division

Surbiton don’t do things quietly. They put nine past Bowdon on Saturday, 9-2, in the loudest result of England’s Men’s Premier Division Round 5.

Elsewhere it was tighter, and more interesting for the title race. Old Georgians, the champions, were held 2-2 at home by Reading. East Grinstead also drew 2-2, against Cardiff & Met. Two draws for the sides you’d expect to be setting the pace, and suddenly the table has a different look to it.

For our money, the Old Georgians result is the one to watch. Dropping points at home to Reading isn’t a disaster in October, but it’s the kind of result that keeps a chasing pack believing. And Surbiton’s nine? That’s a statement to everyone else, draws or not.

Three games were still without a published result when we checked on Saturday night: Wimbledon v Exeter University, Hampstead & Westminster v Oxted, and Holcombe v Beeston. We’ll update this round-up when those scores land, rather than guess at them.
