Surbiton Edge Wimbledon as Birmingham Hit Four on England’s Sunday Card

Sunday in England’s women’s top flight was a day for the away teams and for tight margins. Six games, and the headline act delivered exactly what you’d expect from two heavyweights.

Surbiton beat Wimbledon 1-0. One goal in it, no more. That’s the kind of result that tells you more than a comfortable win does, because Wimbledon at home don’t give games away and Surbiton still found a way. A single goal, three points, and Surbiton keep marching.

The biggest win of the day belonged to the University of Birmingham, who went to Buckingham and won 4-0. That’s a statement scoreline anywhere, let alone away from home. Buckingham will want to forget that one fast, because four goals against you at home leaves questions that don’t go away on their own.

Elsewhere, Loughborough Students won 3-0 away at the University of Nottingham in the day’s other convincing away performance. Student derby, away from home, three goals, clean sheet. Loughborough will be delighted with that.

The other three games were all tight. East Grinstead edged Teddington 2-1 at home, Durham University won 1-0 away at Hampstead & Westminster, and Reading and Bowdon shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Three games decided by a single goal or fewer, which is pretty much this league in a nutshell right now.

Put together, Sunday showed the shape of the women’s Premier Division pretty clearly. The big clubs keep finding ways to win, the student sides are dangerous on their day, and there’s very little between most of these teams once you get past the top two or three. If the season keeps going like this, the race for the top six is going to be a scrap all the way through.
