Dutch Hoofdklasse men's action

Oranje-Rood v Bloemendaal Is Sunday’s Game as Amsterdam Chase Six From Six

Round 6 of the men’s Hoofdklasse, and the fixture list has done us a favour. Second against the form team, the perfect leaders on the road, and the champions already in must-win territory. Sunday is a good day to watch Dutch hockey.

Oranje-Rood v Bloemendaal: the one that matters most

Bloemendaal are second on 13 points. Oranje-Rood are fifth on 10, but they’ve played a game fewer and they just put seven past Tilburg on Thursday night. Read that again: 7-1, away. That’s not a result, that’s a statement.

Bloemendaal had to work for their Thursday win, 3-2 at home to Klein Zwitserland. They’re solid, well-drilled, and they don’t give much away. But Eindhoven right now feels like the hardest away trip in the league, and if Oranje-Rood win this, the one-horse talk around Amsterdam gets a second name. For our money the hosts edge it, and the title race gets interesting.

Amsterdam at Klein Zwitserland: the machine rolls on

Five games, five wins, 15 points. Amsterdam beat HDM 4-1 on Thursday without ever looking rushed, and now they go to The Hague to face a KZ side that pushed Bloemendaal all the way in a 3-2 defeat. KZ at home are no one’s idea of a rest day, but picking against Amsterdam right now takes more courage than sense.

The rest of Sunday

Pinoké v Kampong is the cruelty of the fixture list. Pinoké are still winless after five, a 3-3 with SCHC on Thursday the latest near-miss. Kampong just beat the champions 5-3 and have 10 points from four games. Somebody’s story breaks here.

Rotterdam v Tilburg is simple. The champions lost 5-3 at Kampong on Thursday and now host a Tilburg side with zero points and a 7-1 home defeat still fresh. Anything but a home win and the alarm bells get loud.

Den Bosch, level with Bloemendaal on 13, go to HDM, who shipped four to Amsterdam on Thursday. And SCHC host pointless Schaerweijde in the round’s most lopsided-looking fixture.

Round 6 fixtures — Sunday 25 October (16:00 CEST, 7:00pm PKT): Oranje-Rood v Bloemendaal; Klein Zwitserland v Amsterdam; Pinoké v Kampong; Rotterdam v Tilburg; HDM v Den Bosch; SCHC v Schaerweijde.

The table: Amsterdam 15 (5/5) · Bloemendaal 13 · Den Bosch 13 · Kampong 10 (4 games) · Oranje-Rood 10 (4 games). Bottom: Schaerweijde 0 · Tilburg 0.

Our take

Amsterdam won’t slip at KZ. The real drama is in Eindhoven, where Oranje-Rood can turn a good start into a genuine title challenge. Beat Bloemendaal, with a game in hand, and this league has three contenders instead of one.
