Wednesday’s Other Games: Ursinus Beat Franklin & Marshall in Double Overtime, and Sweet Briar Finally Won One

Wednesday’s Division I card was quiet. Division III made up for it: three overtime games, a top-15 win over a top-10 side, and a first win of the season that took until late October to arrive.

Ursinus 1-0 Franklin & Marshall (2OT)

The game of the day in Collegeville was a stalemate for 75 minutes. No.15 Ursinus and No.10 Franklin & Marshall, both 10-4 and 4-3 in the Centennial, traded chances and corners, Ursinus leading the corner count 6-1 by half-time with Melissa Sessler clearing one off the line for the Diplomats during a run of four straight Ursinus corners.

The winner finally came in the 76th minute, off a penalty corner: the injection worked across the edge of the circle, a shot came in, a redirect split the keeper and a defender, and the injector was waiting unmarked at the far post for the tap-in. Ursinus outshot F&M 15-14 and led shots on goal 9-6; Meghan Dole made seven saves for F&M, who go to Dickinson on Saturday still chasing the conference pack.

Immaculata 2-1 Wilson (OT)

Alexis Andrada had the kind of night forwards dream about. She opened the scoring at 31:54, her ninth goal of the season. Kate Seymour equalised for Wilson at 56:59, beating three defenders on a solo run and finishing through the keeper’s legs for her eighth. Then, in overtime, Andrada was fouled from behind on a breakaway and converted the penalty stroke herself at 67:11.

That’s her tenth goal of the season, her second overtime winner this year, and she becomes the first player in Immaculata’s modern era to score 10 or more in three different seasons. The win, Immaculata’s third in overtime this season, clinches their United East tournament spot. It was also the first meeting between these schools in nine years.

Sweet Briar 2-1 Eastern Mennonite (OT)

And the night’s happiest result: Sweet Briar won a hockey game. The Vixens were 0-12 when Haley Littlefield scored at 7:31, EMU levelled off a corner at 43:14, and Littlefield won it at 65:01 in overtime, her first multi-goal game, after being denied twice in the previous four minutes. It’s head coach Kylie Gargiulo’s first win at Sweet Briar, and the fourth straight time the Vixens have beaten EMU. A 1-12 record doesn’t sound like much. In that locker room, it will have sounded like everything.
