Punjab Wants the 2030 Hockey World Cup: Mann Asks Hockey India to Name Jalandhar and Mohali at the Champions Trophy Closing Ceremony
Punjab didn’t wait long to make its next ask. A day into hosting its first Asian Champions Trophy, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann told Hockey India he wants the 2030 Hockey World Cup too. Mann made the pitch at the tournament inauguration on Tuesday 27 October at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, with the six captains honoured on stage. He asked Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh to announce Punjab as host during the closing ceremony on 5 November in Mohali. That’s a pitch, not a decision. The final call on venues sits with the relevant hockey authorities, and nobody has confirmed anything yet. Still, the timing is deliberate. India are scheduled to host the 2030 World Cup, according to local reports of the bid, and Punjab is arguing that this tournament is its audition. Get the Champions Trophy right, Mann’s case goes, and the World Cup follows. A successful week in Jalandhar and Mohali is the whole argument in one sentence.
He leaned hard on Punjab’s hockey history to make it. “Punjab and hockey share an inseparable bond,” he said at the opening, calling the state’s contribution to Indian hockey a legacy built on passion, sacrifice and discipline. “Hockey is in the blood of Punjab, and every generation of our players has carried this legacy forward with immense pride.” It’s the kind of line that lands in Jalandhar, a city that has produced Olympians for decades and treats the sport like family business.
The numbers behind the pitch were laid out before the tournament too. Mann’s government says it has allocated 1,743 crore rupees to sport this financial year, is developing 3,148 rural sports grounds, 750 of them already opened, and 6,000 modern gymnasiums, 500 of them operational. The message is that Punjab isn’t just asking for a tournament, it’s building the grounds to justify one.
For now the Champions Trophy has to do the talking. India opened with a 13-0 win over Bangladesh on Tuesday night and sit top of the table. The league stage runs in Jalandhar until 2 November, then the semi-finals move to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali on 4 November, with the medal matches and closing ceremony on 5 November. If Mann gets his announcement that night, Punjab’s week ends with a bigger prize than a trophy. If he doesn’t, the bid stays open and the argument continues. Either way, Punjab has said it out loud now, in front of six national teams and a home crowd. That was the point.
